Storyteller...Singer...
Composer...Teacher...
Maker of Ceremony...

Through song, story and gesture Joan creates for her listeners the place where forgotten dreams are remembered, where we feel again our intimate and essential connection with the Earth, and where we are welcomed back to the rich inner landscape that is our native country.

Joan's pictureIn solo performances Joan weaves poetry, song and story together into unique and moving explorations of themes that interest her. As a guest speaker, workshop and retreat leader, and conference weaver, she creates imaginative interactive situations in which the practical aspects of our daily lives are seen in the light of poetic and mythic metaphor.

Her gifts for musical storytelling and for easily bringing others into the sacred dimension of imaginative space come together in her ceremonial work. As a teacher of singing, she helps students reassociate their vocal sounds with their physical sensations, seeking the expressive, natural voice that flows from a relaxed and expanded body.

Comments about Joan and her work:

"This is music that gently embraces your heart, soothing it like a mother's chant. Listening to it allows you to feel that Joan understands your joy and pain, and can help you transform it into beautiful song."

  • - June Singer, author of Boundaries of the Soul: The Practice of Jung's Psychology

"Joan McMillen is creating an art form that is both a mystical prayer and a spiritual dance. Her feminine consciousness makes these ceremonies experiences of harmony, beauty and integrity for men and woman alike. Her music lingers with me and echoes in the inner chambers of my soul. These ceremonies are a valuable resource for any community or group who desires to affirm the spiritual dimension of their activities."

  • - Marlene DeNardo, University of Creation Spirituality, Oakland, CA

"As the Director of the Marianist Retreat Center I have had the delightful opportunity to work with and experience the work of Joan McMillen, composer, philosopher, musician, and creator of ritual. She is a woman full of beauty, integrity, and spirit which make the simple act of being in her presence true good fortune."

  • - Mimi Latno, Marianist Retreat Center, Cupertino, CA
